Healthy Architecture

What sets us apart

Sustainability takes care of the planet. Healthy Architecture takes care of those who live on it.

We spend around 90% of our time indoors. The quality of the air we breathe, the light we receive, the quiet that allows us to rest, and the presence of nature in urban spaces have a direct, measurable effect on our health, sleep, productivity and emotional well-being.

At Espaço A Arquitetura, Healthy Architecture is not an aesthetic add-on: it is a technical design criterion. Every decision — from solar orientation to the choice of a finish — is assessed for its impact on the human body. The methodology is applied to both new builds and renovations, where there are often significant gains to be recovered.

Caroline Bollmann explains Healthy Architecture.

In just a few minutes, the architect summarises what the methodology is, why it transforms the health of those who inhabit the space, and how the studio applies the four pillars in practice.

01

Air quality

Indoor air quality is the control of pollutants, humidity, temperature and air renewal within an enclosed space. It assesses construction materials, finishes, furniture, ventilation systems and the absence of mould and excess CO₂.

Why it affects health

Poor air quality causes allergies, respiratory irritation, headaches, fatigue and trouble concentrating. Properly ventilated spaces reduce asthma, rhinitis and sleep problems, while boosting cognitive performance in both adults and children.

How Espaço A applies it

Espaço A specifies low-VOC products, sizes air renewal according to occupancy, designs natural cross-ventilation and fixes water infiltration, moisture and defects that compromise the breathability of the space.

02

Natural light

Natural light in healthy architecture goes beyond large windows: it involves solar orientation, the size and position of openings, glare control, and artificial light with a colour temperature that respects the body's circadian rhythm.

Why it affects health

Natural light early in the day regulates the body clock, improving sleep quality, mood, immunity and productivity. Excessive blue light at night and glare during the day, on the other hand, cause eye strain, insomnia and discomfort.

How Espaço A applies it

Every project receives a solar exposure study by façade. We position bedrooms, living rooms and home offices to receive diffuse light at the right time of day, install curtains and brise-soleils that prevent glare, and design artificial lighting with a colour temperature that varies throughout the day.

03

Acoustic comfort

Acoustic comfort is the balance between blocking unwanted noise and absorbing internal reverberation. It includes insulation of walls, floors and window frames, absorbent ceilings, tactile finishes and spatial organisation that separates quiet zones from noisy areas.

Why it affects health

Chronic noise and high reverberation raise stress and blood pressure, hinder concentration and disrupt sleep. Well-treated acoustic environments promote rest, privacy, clear communication and mental well-being.

How Espaço A applies it

Espaço A analyses sources of external and internal noise before designing. We specify glazing, window frames, ceilings, curtains and finishes that reduce impact noise and reverberation, creating quiet zones for rest and concentration.

04

Biophilia

Biophilia is the conscious connection between the built environment and nature. It is applied through internal gardens, courtyards, large planters, views of greenery, natural materials, daylight, and even sounds and textures that evoke natural elements.

Why it affects health

Proximity to nature lowers cortisol, reduces anxiety, speeds up recovery from illness and improves restorative attention. Biophilic spaces offset the effects of urban stress and prolonged indoor living.

How Espaço A applies it

We insert vegetation as part of the project's structure — not as decoration. Courtyards, winter gardens, timber slats, natural stone and tactile palettes create a calm, continuous sensory experience at every scale, from apartments to houses.

Certification

Healthy Building Certificate

The Healthy Building Certificate is an international certification that assesses buildings against scientific indoor environmental quality criteria. The programme measures air quality, water, light, acoustic comfort, temperature, ergonomics and mental well-being — turning abstractions into technical indicators.

Why is Caroline certified?

Caroline Bollmann earned the Healthy Building certification to internationally validate a practice she had already been developing since her Master's in Comfort in the Built Environment at UFPR. The certification gives the studio a common, measurable language to design, execute and communicate the benefits of each space to the client.

  • Measurable technical criteria
  • Applicable to new builds and renovations
  • Scientific basis in environmental comfort
  • Personalised service from the architect

Clínica Odontológica L | K

The complete renovation of the Dental Clinic in Brasília applied Healthy Architecture criteria to a commercial healthcare setting. Low-VOC materials were specified, acoustic solutions absorbed reverberation in the treatment rooms, natural light reached the rooms with openings, and controlled ventilation renewed the indoor air — reducing patients' anxiety and protecting staff health throughout the day.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Healthy Architecture.

Direct answers about what it is, how much it costs, and how to start applying the methodology to your project.
What is Healthy Architecture?

It is a design methodology that measures and optimises environmental factors — air quality, natural light, acoustic comfort, biophilia and materials — to create spaces that restore the physical and mental health of the people who inhabit them.

What are VOCs and why do they matter in architecture?

VOCs are Volatile Organic Compounds emitted by paints, solvents, adhesives, finishes and some furniture. In enclosed spaces they can irritate the airways, cause headaches, trigger allergies and reduce indoor air quality. That is why we specify low-VOC-emission materials in our projects.

Is Healthy Architecture the same thing as sustainability?

No. Sustainability measures a building's impact on the planet; Healthy Architecture measures a building's impact on the human body. In practice, the two go hand in hand: low-emission materials, natural light and efficient ventilation benefit both.

How much does a project focused on Healthy Architecture cost?

The investment depends on floor area, complexity and scope. Environmental comfort analysis is integrated into the project and does not represent a significant additional cost when planned from the outset. Renovations can also apply the principles selectively.

Can Healthy Architecture be applied in apartments?

Yes. Many interventions are viable in apartments: cross-ventilation, low-emission material choices, biophilia with vertical gardens and planters, circadian lighting, and acoustic treatment with curtains, ceilings and finishes.

Is the Healthy Building certification recognised in Brazil?

Yes. The certification is international and applicable to projects in Brazil. Caroline Bollmann is certified and uses the methodology's technical criteria to measure environmental comfort in every project the studio undertakes.
